Common questions
How do I play?
You start at the bottom of the ladder and climb to the target word at the top. Each new rung changes exactly one letter of the word below it. Tap the tile you want to change, type a letter, and press Enter. Every rung has to be a real word: a word the game doesn't know shakes and costs nothing, and you can't use a word that's already on the ladder.
What are par and the ratings?
Par is the shortest climb there is from the start word to the target. Every step you take counts, including steps you later undo.
- Perfect: par, with no hints.
- Great: par + 1, or par with a hint.
- Good: par + 2 or more.
How do hints and undo work?
A hint marks the tile to change on your next rung, on a shortest way to the target. It never shows the letter. The tile glows gold until you type there. Undo takes the top rung back so you can try another word, but the step it cost still counts.
When does the daily change?
Everyone gets the same daily, and it changes at the same moment worldwide: 05:00 UTC. That's 07:00 in Croatia in summer and 06:00 in winter. Once you've solved today's daily, Today counts down to the next one. If you started yesterday's daily and didn't finish it, Today offers "Yesterday's climb" until the next daily arrives, and finishing it still counts for your streak.
The puzzles follow the week: Monday has three-letter words, and the words get longer and par gets higher towards Sunday.
How does the streak work, and what's a freeze?
Solve the daily on its own day and your streak grows by one. If you miss a day, a freeze keeps your streak going instead of resetting it. You hold at most one freeze: a new player starts with one, and it comes back every Monday. Dailies you play later from the Archive don't count toward the streak.
What are Practice and the Archive?
Practice gives you as many extra climbs as you like: pick a word length and play. It keeps your 20 most recent games. The Archive is a calendar of past dailies, where you can play the ones you missed and look back at the ones you solved.
Where is my progress saved?
On your device. There's no account and no cloud sync, so deleting the game deletes your results, streak and badges. A backup of your device to iCloud or a computer includes them.
What does Game Center do?
The game offers to sign you in to Game Center when it starts, or you can sign in later in your device's Settings app. While you're signed in, your score for today's daily goes to the "Today's climb" leaderboard, which starts over with each daily, and the Win screen shows where you rank. Your badges also unlock as Game Center achievements. Settings in the game has a Game Center row that opens them. You can play everything without signing in.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone with iOS 15 or later, and iPad with iPadOS 15 or later. It plays in portrait on iPhone, in any orientation on iPad, and on the iPhone Duo open, closed or half-folded. It works offline.
